"From Space to Field" was the title of the inaugural exhibition at SITE Gallery Houston at the Silos at Sawyer Yards, inside an old rice silo. It traced the trajectory from the definition of sculpture as a freestanding, volumetric object to the reconstruction of space allowing the creation of new sculptural fields. Many artists have chosen the installation medium because of the ability to go beyond faded conventions and to be free to mine the novel contemporary symbols and images. They are also courageous pioneers since these works defy easy commodification, and commercial success may be elusive.

The stark theatricality of the soaring silos provides a dramatic stage for site-specific installations. The unique architecture of The Silos, its cave like spaces, its industrial patina, has challenged the artists to create works of art of great ambition and scope.

At the same time, installation art directly engages the viewers and their experience is that of a dynamic event rather than a static concept. The intensity of the architectural environment, the addition of soundscapes or performance art, is likely to enhance the viewer's sensations and emotional memories.

“From Space to Field” highlighted the evolution from sculpture as a single static object to the exploration of spatial concepts with all its tantalizing possibilities.
